The Windshield
The rain a ribbon of warmth
 On the windshield
 The reflection in the glass
 Bends to one side
 As if war had come
 To lay us down

 You know those birds
They fly in a big cloud
 They don't have any words
 But when they talk
They say, “Oh, what are we ?
Do you see that cloud ?" It could be
 You're out of your mind
The wind  The smoke The heat
The little hairs on the back of my head
 Recognise you.

When I was a child  I played with a dead Snowball  Now I sit by the window
And look out at the world
It's like watching a movie
There's graffiti all over the car
And broken glass in the trunk  and a stack of plastic milk bottles  I'm kind of interested to see
Where this light is going to take me
At this time of year  Water is fresher than snow  Plus it doesn’t seem right to burn
 What little fire we’ve left
On these pale embers of ourselves
And all the while our minds keep drifting
To that landlocked city of ours. All the things you left on your bed
Like pictures of people you’d love to meet  At the crack of dawn. LAURIE ANDERSON APRIL 2022

Newspaper 03:48
The Newspaper Texte de Laurie Anderson et David Linx Musique de Evan Ziporyn, David Linx et Bruno Letort Voice 1 : The Newspaper, You’re the only one who knows what's real  And what isn’t  That's why I'm telling you all this  And not just recalling  The places I've been and what I've seen  Voice 2 : An avalanche of absence and emptiness under heavens of confusion, we now talk in bumper stickers and yet we are, still, taken aback… Voice 1 : Why aren't we allowed to leave as often as we want For all the work we've put into  These latrines, these cemeteries, this war
VOICE 2 : both shocked and in awe of all the noise that comes with lies. But beauty is elastic and comes in unrecognizable shapes. VOICE 1 : So listen closely to these newspapers and magazines  They're full of the news, correct? VOICE 2 : But what becomes of us when we spend all our time trying not to lose. One can’t win when one doesn’t lose. VOICE 1 : We lay our heads down on the newspapers  VOICE 2 : Very much VOICE 1 : And pull the blanket up over our heads  And in training for war, one of the first things  that General Macon did VOICE 2 : Very much like rhythm can only be felt, VOICE 1 : Was to burn all the newspapers. VOICE 2 : Danced to and on, when it’s safe, nothing is safe. VOICE 1 : So give us back our names  We'd like to see them read aloud. VOICE 2 : Peace comes only with the acceptance that nothing is safe, VOICE 1 : Aloud. VOICE 2 : That everything can be lost, VOICE 1 : Aloud. VOICE 2 : Any second of any given day

about

Fixed, written music sometimes leaves room for improvisation. Whether in jazz, with its proposed themes, then the free fields offered to instrumentalists, or in contemporary music, where the open works proposed sketched out framework-free areas in which musicians could free themselves from the written word. In "Black Museum", improvisation was the source of the written word, of the composition.

Composer Bruno Letort is no stranger to crossing genres, having written numerous contemporary works for orchestra, ensemble or soloist (Orchestre National de France, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Noël Akchoté, Richard Galiano, André Ceccarelli, Tana Quartet, Trio d'Argent... ), while orchestrating "Multitude", Stromae's latest album (Victoire de la musique 2023), proposed to the cream of the improvisation world, notably American, to try this unique experiment of making improvisation the first stone of a composition for large instrumental ensemble. The rule was simple: improvise on a metronome, with no other constraints, neither rhythmic nor harmonic; simply play freely. Laurie Anderson, David Krakauer, Evan Ziporyn, David Torn, Mile Ladd, Régïs Boulard and David Linx, among others, were enthusiastic about the project and the first recorded elements, and agreed to embark on this astonishing, subtle marriage of the written word and free form. "Black Museum" explores the most unexpected sounds of orchestral playing and the most surprising harmonic and rhythmic constructions.
